About Me

My name is George Wallace.  I am a retired Army Chaplain with four combat tours and over thirty years of military service.  I began practicing vipassana more than fifteen years ago as an essential component of my recovery from war.  I have in recent years become more focused on Zen.  I am a certified mindfulness teacher which involved two years of training with Jack Kornfield’s mindfulness teacher program (MMTCP).

My graduate training in theology / (a)theology focused on the medieval Christian mystics and the work of Matthew Fox.  While on active duty as an Army chaplain I specialized in clinical chaplaincy with an emphasis on PTSD, suicidology and depression.  My current passions are spending time with my kids, meditation, hiking in the Pacific Northwest and reading.

About The Title

Dharma is from Sanskrit and is used in Hinduism and Buddhism to refer to what is true about reality.  In Buddhism dharma refers to the nature of reality as a universal truth taught by the Buddha.  Dharma also refers to the teachings which include the four noble truths, the eightfold path, and the law of karma.  The word Dark in the title refers to crisis, loss of previous faith, dark night of the soul and deconstruction.

The title is reflective of my own journey through existential crisis, post-traumatic stress, and depression.  My recovery included the discovery and practice of Buddhist meditation and a recovery of contemplative practice involving poetry and the arts.  While my spirituality is primarily informed by the Buddhist dharma tradition, it is eclectically shaped by Native American spirituality, deep ecumenism, the poetic and artistic traditions, and science, all in tune with my Celtic mystical roots.

Donations (Dana)

My work itself is extended to veteran freely. While donations help support the cost of this site and my work, my hope is that the work would be supported by people who love veterans rather than the veterans themselves.
